New Wireless Gear →
For all the friends with pedal boards… something worth checking out. I made the jump from Shure to Line 6 based on the promise of wireless being attached to my pedal board. The newer version noted in the link looks like Line 6 has made some awesome improvements.

Xmas 4 Everyone
Tonight, I crashed a very important party - Christmas For Everyone. The hosts were a handful of students here at Calvary who had put together a mixture of the arts - ceramics, photography, live music, paintings. I had a chance to hear some really great covers by some emerging student-singer/songwriters. I also bid at their silent auction. (I imagine my bids would have been even higher had I...

Ten Fatal Flaws of Leadership
A friend passed this onto me from a twitter feed. It is from Harvard business school and can be found here. The top ten fatal flaws of leadership: Lack energy and enthusiasm. They see new initiatives as a burden, rarely volunteer, and fear being overwhelmed. One such leader was described as having the ability to “suck all the energy out of any room.” Accept their own mediocre performance. They...

Nashville Day 6 - Shredding & The Frothy Monkey
This is me shredding on my new electric guitar! Brian and Todd went with me and showed me around the local Guitar Center. Todd Shay (shown left) is a ridiculously good looking man as well as guitar extraordinaire. I especially like the riffy stuff he came up with on my song “Love Divine.” Brian Unger (shown right) taught me how to play acoustic guitar and helped develop my artistry over...

Nashville Day 5 - What I look like (to kids)
You should always be concerned about how you’re coming across - what you feel like, sound like, LOOK like. This is a rendering of me, made by Olivia Unger. I especially like the details of the skulls on my shoes (Ed Hardy’s). Sadly, I never knew my arms were so short!

Nashville Day 3 - Drinking from a Jelly Jar
Yesterday I spent most of my time in Downtown Franklin. The downtown strip reminds me a lot of Los Gatos or Saratoga (where I’m from). Here, there are lots of refurbished historic buildings servicing boutiques and eateries. I took a picture of one of the first places I ever ate in the South. The restaurant is called, “Pucketts” and the menu has things like “meat and 1” (alien...

Nashville Day 1 - Church at Fellowship
I flew into Nashville late last night. I had a back ache once I landed. I think its because I sat on one butt cheek for the length of the flight (due to the little room my fellow passenger provided). I knew I was in trouble when this individual could not fold down the arm rest properly (due to the airline’s small seats and this passanger’s rather larg physique). I sort of...

Sound Cloud
I just was watching the latest Imogen Heap vblog. She’s one of my favorite artists due to her crazy ability to push outside “the box.” While checking out her newest rants, I became aware of a cool site called “Sound Cloud.” She has some stuff posted via sound cloud.  Seems like a cool resource for other artists, etc.

Merry Christmas
Merry Christmas! It has been a fantastic and full year for me. Alongside leading a large church through significant cultural change, I’ve had the privilege to tour to new places, meet new friends, and also catch up with old friends. My new disc, “Mirrors and Moonbeams,” has afforded me some licensing and publishing opportunities as well as some exciting touring invitations in...

This is a quick recap of my new, “vintage” pew currently housed in my music room. Some people are paid with cash… others with pews. I prefer the latter.

Nevada
Day 2 here in Nevada. I’m out with the boys performing this open-air venue. We’re playing on this trailer rig that opens up to a full-blown stage/lights, etc. Sound is incredible and today there are supposed to be all sorts of people coming out of the woodwork. James, drummer, had the opportunity to play alongside this crazy group of muscle men. They break stuff and bend stuff and...

Cool Phone Call
A woman called my cell this week. She happens to go to the same church and had recently picked up the new disc, “Mirrors and Moonbeams.” She wanted to share with me how the new disc is impacting her. It was really amazing and one of those moments as a songwriter and performer that I live for. In tears she shared how God meets her through the album. She mentioned several songs off the...

iPod Touch and Tracks
So, as I’ve written previously, with the release of my newest CD, “Mirrors and Moonbeams,” I’ve been ambitiously including background tracks into my live sets. I say “ambitious” not because I’m a stud but because getting everything to sync up in multiple applications has been a headache. I began by using software/hardware which supports multiple outputs...

Sanctuary
Last week I was invited to play at Menlo Park Presbyterian’s evening service called, “Sanctuary.” It was exciting to meet the people of Sanctuary as it is one of the few places known for a strong young-adult/young-professional ministry within the immediate area. The room reminded me of Koinonia Koffee House located in Campbell, CA. It was a shallow yet long room with incredible...

Gear
People often ask me about some of the gear I use when performing loops and such. It has become a bit of joke because some of the gear is considered “digital” and thus not vintage-boutique cool. My guitar buddies always tell me their tube tone is way better. To a point, I let them think they’re right. : ) I made the jump to digital after having to perform enough times to...

Restaurant Phenomena
I recently became aware of a psychological phenomena that I’d like to refer to as the “restaurant phenomena.” Have you ever walked the strip of an unfamiliar town looking for a place to eat dinner? Maybe with friends or family along side you? Remember that one restaurant with nobody in it? It appeared to be a little dated in its decor and such. Your party quickly deduced something must be wrong...

Creativity Gone Bad
A few nights ago I decided I wanted a healthy little snack. I pulled out a pack of instant pudding. It has only 2 steps: 1 - add 2 cups of cold milk to powder mix 2 - stir for 2 minutes and pour into individual bowls to be eaten That seemed boring and sort of linear. I noticed behind the instant pudding box some lady fingers (used in Tiramisu). I figured I could sort of add them, chop up some...

New Book
I was handed a copy of this book.  It’s about leadership and written by a leadership coach who spends most of his time with professional CEO types. The premise is that a lot of the things you and I do are working against us moving forward in our careers. I am realizing more and more that those who “make it” are those who “win” with people. It doesn’t matter...

Beds, Stems, and Tracks
One of the things I’ve always dabbled with (but fully committed to this time around) is adding “stems” to my live shows. If you’re like me, you get a little bummed when the CD doesn’t match well to what you hear in concert. I decided this time around to fix that. After several long days in my “music cave” (quoting Kindle), I’ve got it all working!...

I just got back from a 3 day arts conference in Chicago. It was hosted at Willow Creek Church. A team of 10 people who lead the creative charge back at Calvary Church came with me. We ate deep dish pizza, walked Navy Pier, and I even dipped my toe in Lake Michigan.  You can check out a slide show here. At the end of the week, we hung out in Lake Forest and had a really awesome and intense...
